Pearls from the Pend No.6

Recent Additions to the Library

Duncan McAra

SINCE the pre-war and post-war publications about the Knights of St John by authors such as Sir Edwin King, Elizabeth Schermerhorn, Claire Eliane Engel and Jonathan Riley-Smith – to name only a few – there has been in recent decades a surge of interest in the Military Orders and the Crusades in books, both non-fiction and fiction, articles in popular history magazines and scholarly journals and in films.

Students from Scottish universities undertaking research in the Library for their dissertations find very useful the latest historical research based on papers from conferences held at the Museum of St John, St John’s Gate, Clerkenwell, under the auspices of the London Centre for the Study of the Crusades, and in lectures delivered to, and subsequently published by,  the St John Historical Society, also at St John’s Gate.

What has proved fruitful has been the sending of Priory of Scotland  Year Books and the ‘blue book’ (The Knights of St John of Jerusalem in Scotland) to  the Archivists/Librarians of the St John Ambulance Historical Society of Australia, the Order of St John of Jerusalem in The Netherlands and the Bailiwick of Utrecht of the Teutonic Order – and receiving in return their publications including the impressive journal St John History and magnificent examples of Dutch book design and production (with summaries in English).
