New defib for Aberdeenshire leisure centre

Westdyke Leisure Centre in Aberdeenshire’s Westhill area has become the latest venue to install a potentially life-saving defibrillator with help from St John Scotland.

An extraordinary fundraising effort by the centre’s staff, visitors and people from the local area raised more than £1,300 to buy the device. The fundraising was kickstarted by centre coach Lindsay Halliday, who ran the the Stonehaven Half Marathon event in July. Other donations poured in from visitors to the centre who were keen to support the community effort.

St John Scotland topped up funds to purchase the defibrillator, as part of our drive to increase access to the devices across the country. It follows the installation in September of a defibrillator at Westhill Shopping Centre, around a mile down the road from the leisure centre, and means the whole community is now within minutes’ reach of two lifesaving devices.

The new defibrillator been installed on an outside wall, next to the entrance of Westdyke Leisure Centre, and is available to be used 24/7.

Shona McBain, Manager at Westdyke Leisure Centre said: “We recently attended a First Aid course and realised what a vital piece of equipment a defibrillator is, and also how easy they are to use. The centre is really busy here throughout the week, with people of all ages attending classes, so we wanted to be able to have access to a defibrillator should we ever need it in an emergency. It was important to us that it was available for the whole community to use, so we were grateful that St John Scotland helped us to buy a cabinet which means it can be accessed 24/7, even when the centre is closed. We’d also like to thank everyone who donated towards it and helped with the fundraising, we’re delighted that it’s now installed.”

St John Scotland’s team of volunteers in Aberdeen and the North East are working to install more Public Access Defibrillators across the City and Shire. They are keen to hear from community groups or organisations who want to work together to fundraise for other machines, and can be contacted at This email address is being protected from spambots.
