ST JOHN Scotland Aberdeen area chairman Joe Mackie showed very different strings to his bow when, as a leading Burgess of the City and Royal Burgh of Aberdeen — he is one of four assessors to the Lord Dean of Guild — he returned to his transport root by taking the wheel of a vintage Aberdeen Corporation Transport double-decker bus.
The destination for his 26 fellow Burgesses was Alford, 30 miles west of Aberdeen, to inspect the growing collection of vehicles under the care of Grampian Vintage Bus Trust, of which Joe is also a trustee.
At Alford, Joe had arranged tours of both Grampian Transport Museum and the vintage bus collection, and a buffet supper. But the surprise of the evening was being taken for a short trip around Alford in a beautifully restored 1930 Albion single-decker, with Joe at the wheel.
As thanks, Lord Dean of Guild Colin Taylor presented a cheque for £100 to the museum and a certificate from the Burgesses confirming the visit.
